M-Audio AV32 Review: The Best Reference Monitor For Musicians [2024]

This is a review of the M-Audio AV32 studio monitor in which you will get all the details and insights about this low range audio gear suitable for home studios.

Choosing a studio monitor for your home studio is like searching for a needle inside the ocean. Especially when you are looking for a one that suits your pocket and delivers a good sound.

However, there are several budget studio monitors available in the market but they won’t satisfy you in sound quality like this one.

So, today I’m here with one of the most popular studio monitors for home studios ie; M-Audio AV32.

Let’s dive into the review.

M-Audio AV32 Studio Monitor Review

m-audio av 32 review

Before buying my KRK Rokit 5 I have used it for more than four years and it was the main part of my mixing panel in my home studio. I mixed a lot of songs with that M-Audio Studio Monitor and my clients were satisfied with the mixing quality.

Frankly saying, M-Audio AV32 is an entry-level studio speaker but as compared to other same range monitors you’ll get something extra with it. No other studio monitors fall in the same range can beat this monitor.

M-Audio AV32 is available on Amazon for purchase. You can check the latest price here

As I said above, it is an entry-level monitor suitable for your home studios. But I really satisfied with my final output with this monitor.

Tweeter

m audio av 32 tweeter

AV32 tweeter is an 1 inch textile dome made with ferrofluid-cooled material. This material is widely used to build tweeters in studio monitors.

You will get a wide range of high end frequencies, however, it’s not as flat as other professional studio monitors. You get a slight harsh boost around 6kHz.

Well, for indie composing, the performance of this tweeter is good. But don’t expect high quality with sound with this tweeter.

Woofer

The woofer is made of polypropylene paper cone with butyl rubber surround as well as closed cell foam for the dust cap.

M-Audio claims the driver is 3 inch, but if we join the rubber surround it will be easily a 3.5.

Well, the small size of the woofer does not give you the balanced low end. So it’s not ideal for bass guitar and kick drums. However the mid range is good so you can record and mix any mid range instrument with it.

Inputs

On the back side of the speaker you will get a slot for detachable power cord and a power switch. The speaker also auto detects music on inputs and will turn itself on and off accordingly.

For the audio ins you will get RCA input ports, which are obviously unbalanced.

One thing that disappoint me with these types of monitors is only one power speaker. You have to connect the other side speaker with the powered one with cable. On front side you will get a volume knob, an aux and a headphone out.

Features and Specifications of M-Audio AV32 Studio Monitor

  • With just 7.5″ x 5.1″ x 6.1″ it is so compact-sized monitor. I put this monitor in my mixing table without any monitor stand etc. Here you can save some extra bucks by not buying monitor stands.
  • The 3-inch flexible, uncovered polypropylene woofer and 1-inch ferrofluid-cooled silk cone tweeter give us an exceptional sound with no added bass and treble.
  • One speaker is active and the other is passive in the pair and you have to connect with the other by the rear panel wire connections.
  • You get stereo RCA inputs with which you can connect your mixers, audio interfaces, and audio instruments. Though not all the audio equipment has RCA outputs so you should have an RCA to phono connectors.
  • It also features a 1/8″ audio auxiliary input just in the front. You can connect any audio gear directly which is a cool feature for practicing etc.
  • The front panel of the active monitor features a volume knob which makes volume control handy.
  • We also get 1/8″ phono input at the front side for connecting your headphones.
  • If we talk about the frequency covered by the woofers and tweeters, the frequency response is from 80Hz to 20kHz. The bass range is little compromisable but below $100 it is worth.
  • The 10 watts per channel amplification power is great for desktop-level nearfield mixing and monitoring. I admit it is not as much power as other high-end monitors but for small home recording, it serves a great sound.
  • The SPL is up to 101.5 dB in the range within 1 meter.
  • The cabinet is made of Vinyl-laminated high-acoustic-efficiency MDF absorbs the extra noise and hum.
  • Signal to noise ratios is below 90 dB.
  • As the woofer is 3″ wide so the crossover frequency is 3,300 kHz which is quite high then 5″ monitors.

Conclusion

As I mentioned earlier in this post I had this monitor for more than 4 years as a part of my secondary home studio. I really satisfied this entry-level budget studio monitor because it gave me some sort of extra benefits in my mixing.

I would like to inform you that it is an entry-level budget studio monitor you don’t get superior flat sound quality. But if you are in search of a decent monitor within $100 then M-audio AV32 will satisfy you with its sound.
